Make the Adjustment

Regardless of where you are in your marriage -- the early years or well down the road, in a solid relationship or one where the tensions  are having an effect -- it is never too soon or too late to invest some new energy. Since we all could use some help in this area, here is an opportunity you need to consider.

Plan to be part of a 6 week adult elective on Sunday mornings at Immanuel. Using the materials by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs on "Love & Respect", this DVD study will take you through five life changing principles that you can apply right now. The class will be lead by Marc Anthony during the second class hour (10:30 to 11:40) in room #L026 (in the lower level).

All of this will start on Sunday morning, November 15 and run through Sunday morning, December 20.

Come on, you know your spouse wants you to do this, so sign up this Sunday morning at Immanuel.

There Is Still Time

There is still time to get involved with us in packing food for orphans in a needy part of the world. Our food packing night is this Sunday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 and then from 6:30 to 7:30. Come to the hour that fits best in your schedule.

For just $55 you can pack a box with enough food for 216 meals and have it delivered to orphans in another country. Pack as many boxes as you would like or sponsor boxes for others to pack.

There will be another chance to register this Sunday morning but you can even just show up that night. Find some friends to join you and make it a "blessing party" together.

BONUS -- One of our small groups has volunteered to supervise child care for the evening. If your kids are old enough, have them help you with the packing. If you have been hesitant to come because you have young ones, now you can join us.

This is going to be a great night so don't miss it!

I was googling financial goal setting, wanting to use resources well and plan for the future.  This lead me to think about the spiritual plan for my family.  What are we working towards?  How do we plan on getting there?
Does it just happen?

From lifeway.com
" ...taking his wife and children to church with him, praying regularly for them, and conducting regular family devotions.  When we focus on these three duties rather than on attaining spiritual goals, these duties tend to become distasteful tasks to be endured - the spiritual equivalent of home maintenance projects."

Faith Devotional - Friday, October 23

The Way to Permanent Faith

"Indeed the hour is coming … that you will be scattered …" (John 16:32).

Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barrenness, to know what internal death to God's blessing means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner emptiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life.

"… you … will leave Me alone." Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God? Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself. The sense of God's blessings is fundamental.

"… be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (16;33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need.

– Oswald Chambers

Faith Devotional - Thursday, October 22

Conquering in Conflict

"By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days" (Hebrews 11:30).

Faith is the key to spiritual conquest.

Forty years had elapsed since the Israelites refused to enter the Promised Land. That unbelieving generation had perished in the wilderness. Now Joshua was leading a new generation in the land. The first obstacle they faced was Jericho – a well-fortified city that was near the mouth of the Jordan River.

Some city walls of that day were wide enough at the top to allow two chariots to ride side by side. That was probably true of Jericho because of its strategic location. That, coupled with the caliber of its army, made the city virtually impregnable – especially to unsophisticated Israelites, who laced military training.

But what is impossible for man is easy for God. And the stage was set for Him to demonstrate His power and for the Israelites to demonstrate their faith and humility.

One can only imagine how embarrassed the Hebrew people felt as they marched around Jericho once a day for six days. That certainly is not your typical military strategy. But on the seventh day, after marching around the city seven times, with the priests blowing their rams' horns, the priests gave one final blast, the people all shouted out loud, and the walls of the city collapsed (Joshua 6:20). Faith had reduced a formidable obstacle to a crumbled ruin.

Can you identify some spiritual obstacles you've faced recently? How did you handle them? You'll always have them to deal with in your Christian walk, but don't fret. See them as opportunities to exercise faith and to see God's power on display in your life. Continue to trust the Lord and to demonstrate your faith by courageously doing what He has called you to do.

– John MacArthur
